Like the sick man in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Detroit is not dead yet!
I recently took a trip to Detroit to visit my brother, and to see some outdoor art exhibits that I had learned about from scrolling through Instagram. In all my years on this earth this was my first trip to Detroit that didn’t involve making a one-day round trip from Grand Rapids to Detroit to just see a Tiger’s game.
During my trip I stumbled upon something remarkable. Remarkable!
Detroit wasn’t dead!… I understand that you may have already known this but I live under a rock and I was unaware of this fact. I mean, it did still have the large stretches of broken down houses and factories but there was a new spark of creativity that I hadn’t seen before.
This was the same change that I had seen in Grand Rapids after Art Prize started. I attribute this to the idea that a creative movement will draw in creatives. Where there are creatives, there is creation and new ideas. As that ghost said in Field of Dreams, “if you build it, they will come.”
Anyways, my apologies for quoting 2 too many movies, but I had a great time in Detroit. I did a quick design exercise with the images I shot that represent the experience I had on my trip.
